Argentina’s pulse sector has been diversifying markets for the past few years, and is now one of the major producers and exporters of beans, ranking 5th worldwide and ranking 7th in the chickpea market. Its strengths lie in the recent higher-level technical and productive potential for agro-industrial and export development, as well as the diversification of products available.

The production for 2020 is estimated at 120 thousand tons, with over 80% going towards exports. Given all the external constraints that the special crops sector has, such as climate, international dollar price, falling prices and large stocks of chickpea available in the world, there has been a constant increase in the area sown since 2004. Argentina’s booming pulse exports reflect the world’s growing appetite for pulses as consumers become increasingly aware of their health, nutritional and environmental benefits.

With Chickpeas being a strategic advantage is that its production is sold almost entirely abroad, Argentina can respond faster to global demand than other sources, without an increase in domestic consumption affecting its exports. The chickpea market size has the potential to grow by USD 4.68 billion during 2020-2024, and the market’s growth momentum will accelerate during the forecast period, Argentina is able to take the lead in supplying the needs during this potential growth. To generate improvement of the Argentine chickpea, as of January 2020 the National Seed Institute issued a resolution stating that the Chickpea Seed must be marketed with the Identified category. Researchers are also working on the development of chickpea varieties with higher yields, better quality and tolerance.

For the pulses market, the global pandemic of Covid-19 was not all bad news: consumption, far from declining, increased due to the need of families to guarantee the supply of protein. According to experts, an increase in consumption was detected globally and in some specific cases the demand was close to  200 percent more.

Equinom Brings Back Genomic Diversity to Legumes

[su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#726c6d” margin=”5″]

The bean crop is very important for Argentina, unlike the main producing countries, allocates almost all of its production, approximately 90%, for export. Argentina has historically exported between 120 and 300 thousand tons of black beans each year! The production of legumes from Salta is the largest (70%) at a national level and the black bean is one of the most cultivated in the province.

The producers are very aware of market changes and regulations, and keep up to date with the latest technology. Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán are gaining more and more crops in northwestern Argentina, an area that provides optimal conditions for its development, since its growth occurs in the middle of a dry climate and with great thermal amplitude.

In addition to constantly monitoring the crop, producers use efficient tools to help prevent diseases. On the other hand, it is important to highlight, that the requirements and standards of consumers in the world are increasingly high and demanding, with the aim of obtaining higher quality grains and healthier and more productive crops. For this reason, our quality control team are committed to find a solution that is aligned to these needs.

Taking into account the importance of opening new markets, some great news for Argentina is that Mexico has reserved 100,000 tons of Argentine black beans per year, amounting to about US $ 140 million. This adds to the positive bulletin as just last month China opened its vegetable market to this country after seven years of negotiation.

Please email sales@tradelinksa.com to reserve your new crop Organic Black Bean supply for this year!

2020/21 Wheat Campaign

Widely known as the most essential of all the food crops, wheat is the most grown crop across different parts of the world. In the current context of global economic uncertainty, wheat shows to be a positive option to face the new agricultural cycle.
Wheat is considered the easiest crop to manage in terms of weeds, although threats from pests are real, as they can damage the plants at a very significant pace. To protect the crop, farmers use regulators for the wheat growth to save them from fungus, rain infection and other issues. It is essential to determine the soil nutrients to improve productivity, and if needed add nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Argentina will achieve the second largest harvest in its history this year, with an estimated production of 21 Mt for 2020! Wheat yield is defined by a number of factors: genetic, technological and ecological. The incorporation of digital technologies in the field has helped farmers around the world.

With a strong export demand for Argentine wheat, prices for the 2020/21 harvest maintains an adequate price with respect to the historical average value of the last five-year period and corresponds to an estimate of high production expected worldwide. According to official data, sales abroad of wheat that has not yet been sown and will be harvested next summer amount to a historical record for this time of year. This is the third consecutive year in which the cereal begins to be traded so early in the local market.

Argentina is ranked as the second world producer of organic food!  There is already more than 3.2 million certified hectares of organic production, which means this is the second largest area in the world. Please email sales@tradelinksa.com if you would like to reserve our Organic Wheat, available as of September!

Conventional & Organic Rice

With roots in New Zealand, TradeLink has been successfully fulfilling the bulk demand of the finest quality conventional and organic rice across the globe. Our range is processed in facilities with elevated levels of food safety, having BRC, GFSI, Kosher, Halal, Gluten-Free, andOrganic certificates. Each stage of the supply chain adheres to the best standard practices.

Rice, being a staple food of over half of the world’s population, with over 500 million metric tons produced annually across the globe, its market has been projected to reach a CAGR of 8 percent in between 2019 and 2024, according to Mordor Intelligence Report.

Moreover, rice is the second most important cereal crop, followed by maize, globally. It is the key exporting resource for many developing countries like in East Asia and Southeast Asia. Hence, rice being the second most consumed cereal grain across the world, the rice-growing market with high anticipated growth rates in the future, brings lucrative opportunities for the distributors, importers, and companies trading in rice. It also entails the rise of the organic rice market due to increasing health awareness and highly-nutritious nature of organic rice.

The Organic Rice Industry

The Organic Rice industry concentration is not high; however, there are many manufacturers in the world, mainly from the U.S. and Western Europe like Argentina, New Zealand, etc., producing high-end products. Organic rice is the key source for organic rice protein that contains a rich content of cystine and methionine. This protein is composed of amino acids that are highly essential for developing body tissues, body muscles, and the immune system. Organic rice is grown without toxins and allergens and it’s 100% free from genetically modified organisms (GMO).

According to Market Watch, the global organic rice market size will increase to $2780 million by 2025. Leveraged on the number one and most widely consumed staple food in the world, and the fact that rice farming is the rising trend, especially the organic rice farming,  TradeLink brings the volume of scale to the market, providing white and brown conventional and organic rice at decent prices.

White Rice Vs. Brown Rice

White rice is the form of rice whose husk and bran are removed completely during the milling process, while the brown rice is husked, graded, cleaned, and sorted, however, it is not polished. Tradelink is the certified provider of finest and responsibly cultivated conventional and organic rice, both brown and white, to reputable food manufacturers and mills. The rice is free from antibiotics, insecticide, and herbicide residues and chemical fertilizer.

2020 New Crop Beans

Argentine bean producers, such as White/Black beans, chickpeas and peas, generally closed a good season, although frost has affected some of the crops. Around 300,000 tons of beans are produced -in their different varieties- about 130,000 tons of chickpeas, another 100,000 of peas and between 40,000 and 50,000 lentils , which are consumed in the domestic market.

In the case of beans and chickpeas, which 95% of the harvest is exported, farmers are very concerned about the impact of the tax increase (the Government brought them to 9%) in Argentine crops. This tax increase implies a very important loss of competitiveness, because the Argentine producers compete against countries that do not penalize exports and even subsidize them in some cases. The most serious consequence here is that it could discourage the planting of pulses in the next campaign.

In the case of chickpeas the scenario is complex because international prices have fallen in recent years. And it competes with strong countries, such as the United States, China, Canada, Turkey and Russia. Prices are low because last season was very good globally and stocks are high. In the case of black and white beans, Argentina is one of the leading export countries.

In this campaign, pea yields fell, due to the drought, to around 2,000 kilos per hectare. Lentil production is mainly concentrated in the south of Santa Fe and in the north of Buenos Aires. The production of legumes from Salta is the largest in Argentina, with an annual harvest that ranges between 150,000 and 200,000 tons, with an area assigned to these crops of just over 197 thousand hectares.

The pea, which is mainly planted in the south of Santa Fe and the north of Buenos Aires -where this campaign suffered from drought with yields of 2,000 kilos per hectare.

An interesting possibility on the horizon for Argentina is the opening of the Chinese market. After eight years of negotiations with the Chinese authorities, the deal is almost finished and minimal details are missing. China is the world’s second largest importer of yellow peas and being able to export to this market is a great opportunity.

Over the years along with its increasing demand, production of sesame seed has become widely cultivated, being one of the most favoured crops to farmers for its resistance to withstand unfavourable weather conditions. We work directly with our farmers to ensure quality control and international food safety standards. Thanks to our “boots on the ground”, we can offer a stable supply of sesame seeds direct from origin.

In Paraguay, the sesame plant is found in most of the tropical, subtropical, and southern temperate areas. Depending on conditions, sesame varieties grow from about 0.5 to 2.5 metres tall, and come in a host of different colours, depending upon the variety, including white, yellow, black and red. Sesame crops survive drought and also presence of excess water, in part due to its extensive root system, however the highest-yielding crops thrive best on well-drained, fertile soils of medium texture and neutral pH.

Typically, the seeds are about 3 to 4 mm long by 2 mm wide and 1 mm thick and need to be harvested as dry as possible and stored at 6% moisture or less. If the seed is too moist, it can quickly heat up and become rancid. After harvesting, the seeds are usually cleaned and hulled. Once the seeds have been hulled, they are passed through an electronic colour-sorting machine that rejects any discolored seeds to ensure perfect colour.
