Cassava: Nature and Traditional Uses

Cassava flour is gaining momentum as a “go-to” gluten-free, grain-free flour. It is a tuberous plant, native to South America, which has been used for thousands of years as a staple food source. Today Cassava is being researched as a food security crop due to its resilience to climate change, high yield and low cost of production.  These days cassava is one of the most cultivated and consumed plants for millions of people and has great social and cultural value in South America, Asia and Africa.

GLUTEN, GRAIN AND NUT-FREE

Cassava flour is naturally gluten, grain and nut-free, making it a very suitable substitution for wheat and other alternative flours. In any recipe that requires wheat flour, cassava can be used at a ratio of 1:1, making baking and cooking gluten-free meals incredibly easy.   It is similar to yam, taro, plantains and potato, and is also vegan, vegetarian and paleo!

Cassava flour is the most similar gluten free flour to wheat flour, which is its most valuable characteristic. Unlike other gluten-free flours such as almond or coconut flour, cassava flour is very mild and neutral in flavor. It’s also not grainy or gritty in texture; it is soft and powdery, such as wheat flour that people which is more popular in home cooking.

CASSAVA FLOUR vs TAPIOCA FLOUR

Cassava flour is made from the whole root, peeled, dried and ground. This means it has more dietary fiber than tapioca flour.

Tapioca flour or starch is made from the starch remnants of cassava root, which is obtained after the washing and pulsing process. The moist pulp is pressed, removing the remnants of water and with it the starch. The extracted liquid is evaporated leaving behind a starchy residue – tapioca.

Tapioca is a perfect replacement for cornstarch and can be used in a 1:1 ratio in recipes that require cornstarch as a thickener. Cassava flour can also be used in this instant for thickening soups and sauces.

NUTRIENTS IN CASSAVA:

Cassava is very rich in carbohydrates – about 1 cup of cassava flour (285 g) contains about 110 g of carbohydrates, 5 grams being fiber and about 4.5 being sugar.  Cassava flour is also exceptionally rich in Vitamin C – one cup contains just about the recommended daily value for it.  Per 100 grams, cassava has double the calories and carbohydrates as sweet potato.

Cassava flour contains resistant starches with similar properties to that of soluble fiber. Resistant starches positively benefit the health of the digestive tract, feed good bacteria, reduce inflammation and bloating as well as promote good digestion.

Tradelinks Cassava supply is fully traceable, with our boots on the ground, we have controlled every detail, from the quality of the root, humidity in the region, starch content, sustainability of supply and many other complex details. As always, quality is our promise to you. To ensure our products stand up to your requirements, we don’t take anything for granted. Latest reports indicate that Basmati Rice global consumption is expected to witness significant growth, by 2023 the consumption is estimated to be 17613.7.9 K MT! Analysts have also revealed that the Packaged Basmati Rice market will also continue to boom, rice being the third most consumed staple around the world.

The global Basmati Rice market is valued at USD 10,290 million in 2020 and is expected to reach USD 18,320 million by the end of 2026, growing at a CAGR of 8.5% during 2021-2026.  Prices will maintain the slow downward trend that has been present in recent years.

Basmati grains contain about 0.09 ppm of this aromatic chemical compound naturally, a level that is about 12 times more than non-basmati rice varieties, giving basmati its distinctive spicy fragrance and flavour. This natural aroma is also found in cheese, fruits and other cereals. It is a flavoring agent approved in the United States and Europe, and is used in bakery products for aroma.

Australia faces shortage

Australia is facing a rice shortage with the country predicted to run out of the domestically-grown product by the end of the year. Low rainfall, dry weather and COVID-19 panic buying have all been linked to the diminishing stock. SunRice, the country’s biggest rice supplier, has lost more than $400million in exports.

98 per cent of Australias rice is grown in southern NSW, which is at risk of collapse with the last two years of zero water allocations.

Pakistan Farmers call for protecting Basmati rice

Farmers have urged the government to take prompt measures for the protection and promotion of Basmati rice in and outside of Pakistan and also at all international forums.

They argue that their basmati rice fully qualifies and deserves the geographical indication (GI) tag, and the trademark of basmati belongs to Pakistan, which is an ongoing issue with India.

Indian basmati rice severely impacted

There has been a marked increase in export orders despite the lockdown when it comes to this sector. Some attribute it to the slow resurgence in the restaurant industry after the relaxation of the lockdown.  However, some mention there may be an impact due to issues with Iran which is one of the major importers of the two commodities. Delayed payments from Iran on the back of the “depleting balance” in the rupee-rial trade account is the problem.

Iran is one of the major importers of basmati rice accounting for nearly a third of India’s total exports of the commodity. Ever since the US imposed sanctions on Iran, India could not engage in dollar-denominated trade with the country.

Basmati rice exporters from India are renegotiating with importers from Australia, Canada, and western Europe. The new contracts are to be signed this month after overseas cargo rates climbed aproximately 50% over the past month.

India vs. Pakistan: Basmati Battle at the European Union

Basmati is grown in various parts of India as a special long grain aromatic rice. It is raised and produced in a particular geographical region of the Indian sub-continent, below the foothills of the Himalayas. The area is a part in northern India, below the foothills of the Himalayas forming a part of the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP).” Since India has already applied for the GI tag of Basmati rice , it will have the sole ownership if Pakistan’s opposition fails.

Kenya’s bounty harvest

Rice farmers in Mwea, Kirinyaga County are celebrating a bounty harvest thanks to the ratoon training program launched by Yara East Africa in June with rice farmers in Mwea County to help boost rice quality and good yields. Good fertilizer with the needed nutrients provides for good yields and profit for the farmers. They are celebrating the success they have seen since the launch of good seeding and processing of rice in June this year which has seen farmer yields increase by 27 %.

70% of rice is grown in the Mwea County, where many smallholder farming families are realizing harvests on farmlands once considered too poor to cultivate, to contribute to the country’s social and economic growth. Since they lacked the requisite farm machinery such as tractors to till the land, they engaged manual labour to prepare the farm into sizable plots which were then leveled to allow for holding of water.

The support of our agricultural industries is very crucial, especially at this time of the pandemic. It would be difficult to endure these trying times if the farmers decrease their farming time and system. However, the change in the agricultural system is inevitable. To understand the factors that affect these changes, we give you a list of agriculture hot issues for 2020. This would help us to support the agricultural industry during these transitions.

1. Water and Weather Conditions

Climate change has caused a loss of millions of dollars in the agricultural sector. Storms, increasing temperatures, and natural weather changes lead to various seasons for farmers.

The drying season triggers water shortages all over the country, which farmers have to adapt instantly to maintain or at least increase the production in the midst of climatic irregularities.

For several decades, Australian farmers innovated a cropping system that would uphold the water consumption in farms, which helps agricultural productivity in shape despite the weather changes. Another innovation that leads to continuous maintenance productivity in Australia is the introduction of new crop varieties that can stand draught as well as easier to manage.

2. Agricultural Technology

Australia’s rural regions are far behind agricultural technology and the digital revolution. Water monitoring sensors, network solutions, and any other technologies that would ease the production and harvest process of the farmers are only a few of the resolutions that we all want to make it happen.

Automated harvesting machines, for example, will soon be the norm in the agricultural industry in the coming years. The technology not only focuses on harvesting machines but also on watering the crops and weed spraying.

The innovation’s goal is to boost the production systems, lessen the use of chemicals, and most importantly, optimize the yields of every farmer in Australia.

3. Plant-Based Protein

Plant-based protein is getting popular and in-demand due to the changes in health requirements, religious guides, cultural etiquettes, and dietary reasons. Researches expect that the number of demands will increase in the next few years.

Plant-based products like burgers and sausages achieve the specifications of conventional meat. The consumption can go as high as 4.1 billion by the end of the decade based on CSIRO reports.

4. Manual Workers

Australia’s biggest demand for farmworkers is in the horticulture sector that claims around 96,000 full-time jobs and over 10,000 casual jobs. More foreign workers are being required to cater to the needs of the sector.

The local manpower cannot suffice the needs of the rural areas as more and more people migrate to other countries and never look back at farming.

The current pandemic situation makes the challenge tougher for foreign workers and governments. It is reported that if the manual workers’ concerns are not addressed, there is a possibility that the horticulture sector will slowly die.

5. Consumer Needs and Expectations

Food is a basic necessity; but in recent years, the consumer demands food of higher quality. Some consumers do not only rely on adequate food but healthy and good food.

Consumers are now living a healthy lifestyle; hence, the demand for high nutritional content with lesser chemical residues on crops are slowing rising on the market.

Conclusion

Farming is a business. To produce high-quality products with the expected yields, it is quite required that farmers need to invest in technology. This requires innovations from treated seeds, new crop varieties, data-analysis and monitoring systems, and spray machines. Although small-scale farmers might not be able to afford to invest, it is important to learn how to maximize the existing technology to improve the business.

Land in terms of economics does not refer to the surface of soil, whereas it counts all the natural resources associated to the soil. With the rapid progression, land for agriculture is getting limited and is constricting each day due to constructional development. The natural resources are not being utilized in the proportion to continue the soft flow of agricultural benefits. With the time, land needs to be saved for agriculture. Economy is linked to the agriculture sector keenly.

In economically terms, land expansion refers to the policy of landing a customer with a small contract, and then selling into the organization to expand your footprints to more space, additional departments or more products and services.

The reasons behind the need of the land expansion are as following:

  • Poor use of land and insecure land texture
  • Inappropriate land management practices
  • Human activities
  • Salinity and Water logging
  • Soil erosion

For instance, Human activities are promoting pollution which ultimately adversely effects land. Impact of pollution and over population are causes improper utilization of land. And to over the problem, Land needs to be expanded. The natural resources are required to get utilized in the most useful ways keeping insight to future.

A study found that a country with strong property rights were associated with 5 percent of increase in the GDP growth. Moreover, average annual growth of per capita income by 6 to 14 % points.

With the passing time, land is being less utilized or is not fully utilized along with the natural resources. And the scarcity of land is casing increase in costs. Urban expansion will result in a 1.8% – 2.4% loss of global croplands by 2030 with substantial regional disparities. About 80% of global cropland loss from urban expansion will take place in Asia and Africa while much of the cropland that will be lost is more than twice as productive as national averages. Asia will experience the highest absolute loss in cropland, whereas African countries will experience the highest percentage loss of cropland. Globally, the croplands that are likely to be lost were responsible for 3–4% of worldwide crop production in 2000. Urban expansion is expected to take place on cropland that is 1.77 times more productive than the global average. The loss of cropland is likely to be accompanied by other sustainability risks and threatens livelihoods, with diverging characteristics for different regions.

With the increase in the significance and value of land, the price also boosts accordingly. The Land costs a huge sum where the soil is fertile and productive. There are plethora of reasons impacting real estate’s prices, availability and investment potential. In the past few decades, constructional works have been significantly increasing. Similarly, according to the fertility, productivity, location, natural site and with multiple possible ways of utilizing the land, the cost of land also increases. People buying land for construction consider the spot and the economic value of the plot or piece of that land.

2020 has brought many surprises with it as the United States Department of Agriculture also shared its findings in the last week as US Grain Stocks Report. Traders were expecting small numbers but the United States Department of Agriculture had other ideas about soybean, corn, and wheat supplies. By the end of 2019-20, old crop corn stocks were 50.7 MMT which is 10.2 percent down as compared to the same time in 2019. The ratios were very low than the average pre-report trade which is estimated to be 57MMT. Corn stocks were also 8 percent down as compared to last year while off-farm stocks were 12 percent down year-on-year.

In the fourth quarter of the marketing year, the major consequence is residual usage and higher feed-in light of lower corn for ethanol usage because of travel restrictions due to COVID-19. But because of the huge demand for US corn from China, the price outlook is tolerable unless and until there are some yields reforms from the main US production states.

On 1st September, soybean stocks also surprised below trade expectations at 14.2 MMT. This is shocking knock down by 42 percent or 10.5MMT in comparison to the previous year. If Beijing continues to buy up until this fall, then definitely the US stocks will be able to balance their sheets, particularly in South America. However due to climatic changes in the Pacific Ocean, some regions of Argentina and Brazil have suffered a dryer season this year. Less than average rainfall in Brazil will result in delayed sowing of corn and soybean which will result in fewer yields.

At the end of the first quarter of the year 2020-21, US wheat stocks a total of 58.8 MMT, which is lowest since 2015. From last September, stocks held on a farm are estimated to be 4 percent down, and off – farms stocks are 10 percent down from a year ago. This lower number indicates that from June to August 2020 reduction is up to 4 percent from the same months of 2019.

The USDA also minimized its wheat production from 300,000 metric tons to 49.6MMT due to lower yield in fields. At the beginning of the last month, Barley stocks totaled 3.9MMT, which is 5 percent down from September 2019. The stock of Sorghum across the country was 54 percent down in September which was 750,000 metric tons in the last year.

Last Week, all US future bourses faced a speeding ticket related to stock numbers of corn surging by 4 percent, soybean by 3 percent, and wheat by 5 percent. All the funds were consumed in buying 55,000 corn contracts, 30,000 soybeans, and 25,000 wheat contracts. In a nutshell that amount is almost equal to 14.5 million metric tonnes of grain in one day. Since the rally, the two trading sessions of both corn and soybean futures show Wednesday price gains but in the case of wheat, it gave up US$2 of the US$10.50 per metric ton surge. The market showed a surprising reaction to the wheat number.

The global balance sheet seems extremely comfortable at the moment yet the US is highly uncompetitive in the current export scene. The issues faced by Argentina were handled by higher Russian production. The Russian Ag Ministry in the last week increased its wheat harvest which is estimated to be 82MMT from 75MMT. In comparison, The USDA is still pacing at 78MMT but it can overcome this by releasing its report on the latest Worlds Agricultural Supply and Demands Estimate by Friday. As a result, the Russian export forecasts are on the rise.

Sovecon, which is a local agricultural consultancy has increased its export of wheat which is estimated to be 1.7MMT to 38.8MMT which meets the record of 41.4MMT for the years 2017-18. In the July-December half, it will export at 24MMT and almost 15MMT in the other second half of the year. In Argentina, the extremely dry season has resulted in less wheat production as the farmers also reported that the majority of them will be unable to feed themselves.

The BAFE (Buenos Aires Grain Exchange) has minimized its wheat harvest of 2020-21 to 17.5MMT down from 21MMT in August. It shows a revised lower than the USDA number as it is less than 2MMT. For this year, the wheat price seems to be all right but if the dryness in the climate of the Black Sea continues for the next year as well, the situation will be alarming. In such a situation, the whole globe will face a shortage of wheat supply. But for Australian farmers, there is great news related to wheat production, as climatic disturbances in the Black Sea and South America will continue disturbing the summer and winter crop production.

In the coming weeks of this year, the domestic harvest will increase but still, there is a major issue as the Bureau of Meteorology has officially announced the sudden climatic changes on the way can result in minimum rainfall.

Eco-friendly Packaging

There is an increasing awareness among consumers in some regions of the ill effects of plastic packaging on health, which has increased demand for eco-friendly products in the last few years. They often also need less energy to manufacture, as a side benefit but their main objective is to reduce the huge amount of plastic waste – 40% of plastic produced is food packaging.  Also, several governments have recently introduced regulations and bans on single use plastics, which is causing manufacturers to re-think their packaging products.

Eco-friendly packaging for food is a rapidly growing market, totaling USD 152.09 billion in 2019, and expecting to reach USD 257.43 billion by 2027. Even with the coronavirus epidemic, sustainable food packaging is looking at being a key industry shaping trend.  Hygiene and food safety will be key factors in the new normal and will be a high priority for across the food industry.

Tetra Pak are also offering a connecting platform where users can trace the sources of their packaging and find advice on the best ways to recycle it.  Some small start-ups are creating packaging from biodegradable material such as sugar cane, corn starch and wood, although the main segment in 2019 was taken by paper and paperboard packaging – flexible and molded paper being used for fresh products, and rigid paperboard used for transportation, especially for bakery, confectionery and convenience foods.

According to recent research, the global chickpeas market reached a volume of 12.7 Million Tons in 2019 and is forecasted to grow in value at a compound annual growth rate of 5.1% between 2020 and 2030, exceeding a valuation of US$142.4 million. The growth rate consist of the dry processing which is projected to account for over 2/3rd of the market share, owing to the low quantity of energy and resources required. It also includes protein isolates and protein concentrates which account for the majority of the market share.

With the prevailing trend of vegetarian meat substitutes, chickpeas are also being utilized for producing textured protein. Besides this, on account of the high cost and limited availability of higher protein sources like soybean, chickpeas have emerged as a low-cost feed additive. To cash in on the growing consumer demand for high quality, nutritious ingredients due to their health benefits, companies in the food processing bakery sectors are moving towards plant-based protein ingredients.

Global Markets

World Chickpea markets were more or less steady even though there was a tightening of supplies of larger grades such as Kabuli types. Because of rising competition for available demand from countries like Russia

European market for retail packed fruits and vegetables is expected to grow around 1-2% per year. Europe is by far the leading importing region, holding a share of over 70% of the world’s total imports. The United Kingdom imports considerably less, but the import value was enough to reach a third place in Europe in 2019. Imports of retail packed fruits and vegetables reached €1.3 billion in 2019.

In Australia the market is very active, growers delivering in the next few weeks will get $550-$560/t being bid for delivery from mid-October, down from the $650 paid in September. Growers want to sell after harvest, and only 10-15 per cent has been traded from growers’ hands so far.

Legume plantations in the Argentine had an increase of 25% however this increase was not reflected in the total production due to the drought that occurred in the country. In the 2020/21 season. the area of legumes exceeded 600,000 hectares. The volumes that have been harvested so far are lower than last seasons, however world market prices have increased so that the foreign exchange income will be the same as last year. Furthermore, there was a significant increase in the destination channels where Argentina regularly exports which helps farmers significantly. The availability of chickpeas will be below previous years, which were 150,000 exportable tons per year and will fall below 70,000 tons this season.

Bangladesh is considered an important chickpea nation, is in the process of restocking its food reserves, which were damaged because of severe flooding this year.

Indian markets remain strong, and improved demand from millers is evident as the un-lockdown phase has started. With regular programs to benefit farmers to get better rates for their produce, trade interest has improved significantly in recent months and is expected to favor further rise in prices in near term.

Canada is estimating 240,000 tonnes of Canadian chickpea production this year, however some researches indicate closer to 175,000 tonnes. Huge 2019-20 carryout volumes in Canada and the United States will lead to continued stagnation and it could take at least another year to finally use up those burdensome stocks. There are expectations for a rebound in Canadian exports in 2020-21 to about 150,000 tonnes, up from slightly more than 100,000 tonnes. Read more on our chickpeas, or send a quote request here.
