Cassava flour is gaining worldwide recognition as an alternative for wheat flour and other gluten-based flours. The global Market is projected to register a growth rate of 3.2% from 2019 to 2024, with an estimated market value of USD 4.5 billion by the end of 2024. Global production is estimated at over 270 million tons for the current year. The demand for Cassava Flour is increasing for Food and Bakery products, due to it having less gluten. The biggest importers to mention are China, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea.

The top producers are Thailand, Nigeria, Indonesia and Brazil. Thailand’s overall tapioca production for the 2020-2021 crop would be below 20 million tonnes, compared with 20-22 million tonnes in the 2019-20 season. They have been tackling a cassava mosaic disease since 2018.

Brazil has been on alert as to possible locust infestation, and also considering the impacts of Covid-19,  farmers are predicting a strong decrease (approximately 3.34%) in cassava production for the 2020/2021 season. In 2017, locusts attacked several cassava crops causing economic losses. In 2018, Brazil produced 536.6 thousand tons of cassava starch, a significant advance of 27% compared to the year before. The projection for Cassava Flour would be more than 1.5 million tons, however in order to reach this volume there would need to be firm contracts with the farmers put in place. As at the end of April, there was 43 thousand tons held in stock. Since 2019, the profit margin has been decreasing, with prices dropping almost 32% between end of 2019 and April 2020. However it is important to highlight that with the possibility of normalizing the work of starch mills, demand could again boost prices. The decrease was a reflection of the greater supply of raw material, which usually occurs in the beginning of the year.

African crops suffered heavy rains in the first quarter of 2020 resulted in flooding, which damaged large portions of standing cassava crops. prices of locally produced foods, such as maize, cassava and sorghum, were about 50 percent above those in April 2019. An outbreak of cassava mosaic disease in southern areas and consequently reduced availabilities exerted additional pressure on cassava prices, besides the effects associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Global Market
Global lentil demand is spiking due to the combined effects of little remaining stocks from the 2019/2020 crop year, logistical issues, and increasing demand for non-perishable food products and alternative sources of protein. The global production is forecasting at an estimated 4,317,600 MT, this would show a 500,000 ton increase, with a carry in of 557,000 MT. However due to low carryout from the 2019-20 crop, supplies will only be up 240,000 tons.

Price Expectations
2020-21 prices are expected to remain at levels even with the current crop year and then trend upwards, setting their highs later in the new crop year. However with red lentils, even higher prices are expected in 2020-21 due to free falling carryout stocks. World stocks are estimated to drop to 277,000 tonnes next year, down from an already low 557,000 tonnes at the end of the current crop year. The prices rose from about USD 44.1 per kg in late 2019 to as high as USD 53 per kg in January 2020. The price of green lentils overall, however, remains relatively steady since 2019.

Australian Red Lentils
Australian red lentil production is suffering in the 2019/2020 season due to continuous drought and the bushfires in late 2019. The country has endured 3 consecutive years of ongoing drought that has severely affected production volumes of lentils.

Argentine Blueberries

In the midst of a pandemic and with prospects of entering the “new normal” phase, the Argentine blueberry producers are already planning the conditions to face the 2020 harvest. To guarantee compliance with the measures imposed by the national government, producers are already preparing the 2020 harvest protocol together with specialists. Argentine blueberries are known to be of the highest quality, last campaign 12.800 tons were exported. This was an increase of 18% compared to the 2018/19 season, of which approximately 25% of exports are organic.

Although prices remain stable, according to global indicators, there will be a decrease of -3.0% globally in 2020, however, it will have a significant rebound and in 2021 we can expect to see a growth of 5.8%.  60% of world demand is from the United States, 30% continental Europe and England, and between Canada and Asia another 10%.

Argentina is working on a project to promote their own varietal development of blueberries. It is a project with a minimum term of 5 years, and what has been planned so far must be deepened and costs must be defined.

More good news is that the Argentine officials are evaluating the possibility of accessing a reduction in China’s import tariffs , given that in recent years this reduction has been made for cranberries, this would allow the country to arrive with more competitive prices.

We have been operating in South America in the frozen fruit and vegetable market since 1994 and has had vast experiences not only with growers in the region, but also importing and exporting these products. We source our IQF Blueberries from reliable, audited, and approved facilities which include BRC accredited factories. Please email sales@tradelinksa.com for more information!
