Where psyllium comes from
Psyllium is effectively a single-origin ingredient. India supplies roughly 85–90% of the world’s psyllium and exports the large majority of its output, with no meaningful second-source country to fall back on. Production is concentrated in two states:
- Gujarat — the leading producing state; the town of Unjha is the central hub for trading and processing.
- Rajasthan — the second producer, with a large planted area but high weather sensitivity.
- Madhya Pradesh and Haryana — smaller contributing volumes.
This concentration is the defining feature of the market: a disruption in these regions transmits directly to global availability.
The crop cycle
The husk is the outer seed coat of Plantago ovata, a short-stemmed annual herb grown as a winter (Rabi) crop. The calendar is tight and predictable:
- Sowing begins in the first week of November and runs through the month.
- Harvest falls in February–March, with spikes cut at maturity after roughly 120 days.
- Mandi arrivals peak from May to July — the current data point for the latest crop now moving through Unjha.
Yield and quality grades
Seed yields generally run around 800–1,000 kg per hectare, with newer ICAR-developed varieties targeting the upper end. The figure that matters most to buyers is recovery: only about 25% of seed weight becomes husk, with the balance going to the animal-feed sector.
Husk trades by purity, from a lowest grade of 85% up to 99%+ or 100% for the whitest, first-mill material. The key quality metric for pharmaceutical and supplement buyers is a swelling factor of 40 ml/g or higher.
The main supply risk: weather
This is the single most important variable to track. The crop’s value depends on a dry maturity and harvest window, which makes it acutely exposed to unseasonal rain.
Why it matters: with cultivation concentrated in arid Gujarat and Rajasthan, a single adverse weather event during flowering or seed-set can sharply reduce yield and husk quality — and because there is no alternative origin at scale, that shock passes straight through to global supply.
Structural acreage pressure
Beyond season-to-season weather, planted area is a longer-running watch-point. In recent years, lower rainfall and reduced water availability have pushed some growers toward competing crops, contributing to area declines across the main producing states. That makes each October–November sowing season worth monitoring in its own right.
Demand outlook
Demand fundamentals remain firm and broadly counter-cyclical to supply tightness, driven by rising preference for natural, plant-based fibre across food and pharmaceutical applications.
- Dietary supplements are the dominant end-use, with North America the largest consumer market.
- Organic psyllium is growing at roughly 10% a year, prompting processors to contract directly with farmers.
- Food applications — gluten-free bakery, fibre-enriched cereals and dairy-free formulations — continue to widen the demand base.
What buyers should watch
- Sowing acreage — October–November planted area in Gujarat and Rajasthan sets the season’s ceiling.
- Maturity rain — any unseasonal rain in the February–May harvest window threatens both yield and quality.
- Unjha arrivals — fresh-season volumes from May onward confirm the realised crop.
